            This year's Outstanding Graduate Student, Joshua H
            	                    This year's Outstanding Graduate Student, Joshua Hodney '20, has surrounded himself with amazing people who provided the additional strength he needed to earn his Master of Arts in Teaching.⁠
⁠
“I am confident in my desire and effort to work hard at everything I do, but I know I would not be where I am without such a powerful support system,” Joshua said.⁠
⁠
He feels like it was a miracle to graduate with a 4.0 GPA after juggling the drive from teaching and coaching at Milwaukie High School, living in Clackamas and attending school in Monmouth. He and his wife, Kelley, are new parents to Luke, who was born in March.⁠
⁠
“My biggest source of inspiration and energy comes from my family and friends, especially my wife and the arrival of my son,” he said. “I am especially inspired by my wonderful cohort members and the drive they have. They will all be fantastic teachers that my infant son would be lucky to learn from someday.”⁠
⁠
WOU’s nationally recognized reputation for providing schools with great teachers is what inspired Joshua to earn his Master of Arts in Teaching.⁠
⁠
“I wanted to be part of that legacy,” he said. “I applied only to WOU because I did not want to go to another program.”⁠
⁠
A social studies teacher, Joshua told his students that every generation has been changed and challenged by something. His students compared what is happening with the COVID-19 pandemic to other major generational-defining moments in history.⁠
⁠
“They know that this is a tough thing for all of us, but that they can rise from this more motivated to become even better versions of who they are,” he said. “COVID-19 has taken some wonderful things and people from us, but it also gives us the opportunity to become more resilient, creative and compassionate people.”⁠
⁠
Joshua said he could not have gotten to the finish line without his family, friends, WOU cohort members and the Milwaukie High School community, adding his special thanks go to his mentor teacher Rian Winter, Principal Carmen Gelman, staff, parents, fellow coaches and especially the students.⁠

“I am thankful for the inspiration that WOU has provided for me in the MAT program."⁠

            	                    Monica Cerda Ortiz was one of the two 2023 Delmer Dewey/Julia McCulloch Smith Award recipients. ⁠

As a first-generation and low-income student, Monica ’20 started her freshman year of college feeling powerless and not knowing where she belonged. That quickly changed as she learned the importance of finding campus groups where she felt represented and supported at Western Oregon University.⁠
⁠
Her passion for social justice, ability to empower others and a multitude of other leadership qualities have earned Monica this prestigious recognition.⁠
⁠
“This award is truly an honor and means the world to me. It means the sacrifices my parents, Jesus and Erendira, have made were worth it,” she said. “This award means that with resiliency, optimism and a support system, one can accomplish their goals.”⁠
⁠
Cerda Ortiz’s first leadership experience was joining Discover Leadership. That led her to become a student coordinator for the Multicultural Representatives, which developed her passion to support underrepresented and underserved students. She earned leadership roles in various student organizations including the Associated Students of Western Oregon University (ASWOU), WOU Food Pantry, Oregon Students Association and Unidos Club. Her proposal for a Dream Center won the J. Dolores and Alfred P. Maurice Initiative. Her project was to create a resource center for underrepresented students.⁠
⁠
“My college experience has been truly eye-opening, because I learned that my Latinx community is not represented in crucial places such as local school boards and at the state and federal level,” she said. “I plan to pursue a master’s degree in public policy or education, because I realized one piece of legislation can have a major impact.”⁠
